Flavius Josephus

Josephus is attributed with the fall of Jerusalem to the Romans in 66 C.E., but is credited with writing the only surviving history of the period that was not a religious text. Approximately 1,000 years ago, of Jewish traders from the Middle East who settled in the Sung dynasty's imperial capital of Kaifeng along the Yellow River in east central China. They openly prayed in Hebrew, observed Jewish dietary laws, circumcised their newborn sons and built a synagogue facing Jerusalem in which to worship. They lived in peace for centuries, eventually establishing a Jewish society and culture that has been estimated to range in numbers between 5,000 to 9,000 people. In the 1930s and 1940’s, there were an estimated 30,000-40,000 Jews in China. Most of whom left after the end of World War II or during the Cultural Revolution. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Thomas Friedman’s “From Beirut to Jerusalem”

This 10 page report discusses the 1989 book by foreign correspondent Thomas Friedman. Friedman, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner (1983 and 1988 for Middle East coverage) also won the National Book Award for “From Beirut to Jerusalem.” The most compelling portions of Friedman’s book are about the torment and the turbulence that is Lebanon. As he presents his readers with the relationships he established during his time in both Israel and Lebanon, he calls on one of the fundamentals of social science in terms of that relationship building. The focus of these two Books is the spiritual relationship of the monarchs with God. When the king followed the rules as established in the Mosaic and other covenants, the nation was blessed; when he did not, the nation was punished. Kings begins in the last days of the reign of David and ends with the destruction of the great Temple in Jerusalem. This is a tragic and a sad story but it is also one of hope and encouragement.
